Snip and Sketch is a Microsoft built-in tool to capture a screen shot. It works better than using the Print Screen and saving it in MS Paint for further editing. However, in Windows 10 v1903, new features have been added in Snip and Sketch. We will list them in this guide.

Snip and Sketch app New features
Some new features which will improve the experience of Windows users:
- Automatically add a border to your screenshots.
- Print directly from the app.
- Confirm to discard changes.
- Filename now includes a timestamp.
- Save images as jpg and gif.
- Set Default App to open.
Before proceeding, let’s take a look at settings that are the source of two new features. Click the application menu (top left) and click Settings.
Here you have the following options-
- Auto Copy to Clipboard
- Ask to save snips before closing
- Snip outline
1] Auto Copy to Clipboard
When you change anything using the Snip & Sketch tool, it is copied to the Clipboard. You can immediately open another application such as Paintbrush and paste the changes into it. However, you’ll lose the original screenshot, and you’ll need to use a lot of Ctrl + Z to get back to it.
2] Ask to save snips before closing
If you accidentally hit the close button, it will ask you save. It is turned on by default.
3] Automatically add a border to your screenshots
A lot of you like to add a border to the screenshot. The settings menu allows you to do that. You can choose color and thickness as well.
4] Print directly from the app
If you’re surprised, I’m not surprised. The Snip and Sketch tool did not have an option to print previously. Now the print option is native to Windows 10. You can create a PDF or send it directly to the printer.
5] Filename now includes a timestamp
When you save the clip, the default file name will be like Annotation 2019-05-27 162124. It would be good if the timestamp is necessary for you.
6] Save images as jpg and gif
Good that both of these formats are supported, specially JPG. The file sizes are low less compared to before.
7] Set Default Open to open with
Although I like Snip and Sketch, I do not feel comfortable when it comes to editing. MS Paint still gives a lot of control when editing an image. So if you want to use Snip and Sketch to capture a screenshot, but you can modify it in MS Paint, 3D Paint, or anything else, you can set a default application.
In the list on the left, note the “Open With” option. Click it, and then choose the application. Make sure the default application is selected.
Snip and Sketch have become more useful, but frankly, I will need more control. That’s why I ended up using the print screen and MS Paint.
